"Laying the Foundations" - Putting Stance & Posture
By PGA Golf Coach MATT ANTELL
Consistent putting stems from getting consistently into a solid address position which will promote a stroke that allows us to achieve the desired impact factors to make the ball roll truly.
In terms of address position, always try and work from the group up. Getting into a consistent routine will help ensure that you do things correctly every time, especially when playing under pressure.
When looking at our putting stance and posture, I like to see my players adopt a wide stance – around shoulder width or wider. This will help to provide stability by reducing any unwanted movement in the lower body.
In assuming your posture, tilt forward from the hips until your upper spine/neck (vertebrae C9) is horizontal to the ground with your eyes over the ball. This will when provide the fulcrum around which your shoulders will turn.
Practise getting into this position often, using mirrors to check your angles, and you will be on your way to a new and improved putting stroke!
