Compression technology for golf

Compression technology emerged into public consciousness over the last 3-4 years.  You may have heard it referred to as under-armour, seen it on rugby players, athletes and swimmers.  All sports employing the technology have difference but there are commonalities. In this article I will explain how it applies to golf and whether it would benefit you.

What is the point of a compression suit?

These garments are worn under a golfer’s normal attire acting as a base layer next to the skin.  It serves two functions in one – which other materials cannot.  Firstly it transports excess moisture away from the skin in order to preserve comfort.  Secondly the compression technology will improve muscle performance.

Why does compressing your muscles help?

The science behind this was dramatically endorsed in swimming when 70 records fell to swimmers wearing such suits in 2008.  By applying a firm fitting layer over the surface of a muscle it improves blood flow.  Increased blood flow produces two benefits.

  • It increases oxygen delivery which warms the muscle up more effectively thus reducing chances of injury.
  • It reduces lactic acid build up which increases endurance.

Compression suits vs base layers

Compression suits are not to be confused with “base layer” suits which simply control temperature regulation.  You can get base layer suits that insulate in the cold and those that focus on moisture wicking in warmer climates.  Compression suits can be tailored for both these functions but also increase oxygen delivery and reduce lactic acid.

Can compression technology help the average golfer?

  • In a word, yes.  In terms of avoiding injury, the average golfer rarely warms up adequately.  Putting on a suit underneath your golf clothes is an effective way of improving your preparation for a round.  It doesn’t replace the benefits of doing a proper warm up but it gives you an edge that others won’t have.
  • Many golfers have reported that the snug fit gives their swing a feeling of “togetherness” and helps promote the fluid motion necessary for a consistent tempo.
  • On a cold day, obviously an extra layer help insulate, but the moisture an heat can escape if the sun comes out and you begin perspiring.  It’s as close to “intelligent” clothing as you can get.
  • Golfers who suffer from swelling or discomfort in their feet and ankles can also benefit from the suits promotion of blood flow and reduce their discomfort.

Tips for purchasing the right suit

The key is getting the right size.  When people first try them, they often feel the correct sit is too tight, but soon they feel the benefits.  Mats Lundqvist, head designer for Galvin Green notes that this fit “gives your muscle support and can even improve your posture”. Speak to a retailer who is genuinely a specialist in Galvin Green as they will know the products well enough to recommend the right size for you.

Galvin Green offer tops called the Enzo and bottoms called the Emerson.  These models come in both discreet and colourful colours depending whether you want to draw attention to that fact you are wearing an advantage…
