Royal Cinque Ports
The Original Links, constructed with such speed by Henry Hunter in 1892, had the same greens on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd as exist today. The tees were further forward and the holes shorter. The original Clubhouse was built around the same time following the birth of the Club. It doesn't take more than a casual glance to trace the extensions that have been necessary to follow the Club's development. Today they have a building to be proud of in which the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the staff smiling and helpful and the quality superb. The 19th is worth a visit on its own.
The Deal
course is traditionally laid out on a narrow stretch of land extending
to Sandwich Bay and the natural links terrain has been subtly used
to provide alternative challenges. Each hole has an abundance of
larger sand dunes which establishes the character of the course
and makes it unique. Unlike most other courses the fairways are
just as undulating as the rough and it is seldom that a completely
flat stance can be obtained other than on the tees.
The bunkers (74 in total) on the course are large but fair and easily
seen from the tees and fairways, and are in the most part steep
and revetted. Not all holes have bunkers but this in no way diminishes
their degree of difficulty.
On two of them, the 1st and 18th, there are water ditches which
come into play for the approach shots. As the course runs outward
parallel to the pebble beach, this can present quite a problem (often
for your foursomes partner!) as the beach is an integral part of
the course. The rough is covered in coarse marram grass which is
especially punitive between May and August.
Once the greens have been reached, you will putt on some of the
largest, finest and fastest greens in England .
