Shiskine Golf Club
Location:
The club is situated on the west side of Arran. and can be reached via a small road that runs parallel with the beach off the A841 - the road that runs around the outside of the island.
The Golf:
Machrihanish and Machrie are estalblished courses with no close neighbours. However, to experience another delight, you should take the ferry from the Ayrshire coast at Ardrossan and cross to the Isle of Arran. Here you will find the 12-hole Shiskine Golf Club, which dates back to 1896. This interesting courses features beautiful views of the sea . The unspoiled seaside links of Shiskine Golf and Tennis Club is set in magnificent scenery overlooking the Kilbrannan Sound with splendid views of the Mull of Kintyre. Situated beneath Drumadoon Cliffs at Blackwaterfoot, the original nine-hole course was laid out by Willie Fernie of Troon. Fifteen years or so later Willie Park was brought in to extend the course to 18 holes. During the First World War, however, six of the new holes fell into disuse and for one reason or another remained that way leaving e Park's unique 12-hole layout .
In spite of this anomaly this unique course has been in and around the top 100 best courses in Britain. Notorious for its blind holes which have various signals to indicate when the green is clear and it is safe to play, the course is also crossed by two burns. Other distinguishing characteristics include the longest par 5 on the island at 509 yards. The holes have descriptive names such as 'The Crow's Nest', 'Paradise' and 'Hades' which give an indication of their character. On a summer evening on the 10th tee looking out over the water at the fabulous reddish-pink sunset, 'Paradise' certainly comes close.
It is a course that benefits from playing twice, so as long as you are not put off by its idiosyncrasies you should have a lot of fun. The 3rd and 4th holes, particularly, called “Crows Nest” and “The Shelf” promise realexcitement, nestling underneath the Drumadoon Cliffs. Credit for the neatly trimmed fairways must go to the well trained sheep but the immaculate greens must surely be down to a more skilled hand.
