Crail Golfing Society

Just down the road from St Andrews is the picturesque fishing village of Crail with the kind of picture-postcard harbour typical of the east coast of Fife. It was just outside the village that the Crail Golfing Society was formed in 1786 and the first golf was played. The Club is the 7th oldest in the world. But it was in 1895, on the most easterly tip of Scotland , that the original Links at Balcomie was born. Local expert, Old Tom Morris, was brought in to design an extension to an existing 8 holes, and the result was classic Links we have today.

Balcomie Links:

Today you will find a lovely 18 hole sea-side golf course, not too long (5922 yds) and great fun to play. It is full of interest with magnificent views of the sea from every tee and offers a variety of challenging golf shots. Several of the fairways wind alongside golden sandy bays and rocky outcrops. They come into play at the 2nd, 4th and Hell's Hole - the 5th, where you must make up your mind whether to carry the beach or take the long way round.

A beautiful spot with wonderful sea views, it is perhaps surprising it took so long to build another course here. Over a hundred years later, however, in 1998 a second course, Craighead Links, was opened for play and now looks set to join Balcomie as one of the as on of the "must play" on the East coast.

Craighead Links:

Designed by American designer Gil Hanse, Craighead features many of the best aspects of Scottish classic links. It has panoramic seascapes and country views and is well located just south of the present clubhouse.

Much longer than Balcomie at 6728 yds, Gil has made this a testing but fair challenge. No two consecutive holes face the same direction and with constantly changing conditions, there is enough variety of shots to test every golfer. Numerous strategically placed bunkers and subtle undulating USGA spec greens add to the challenge. Like its sister course, the tee shot is of prime importance to set up an easier second to the green. Finding a route, however, between bunker and rough demands a fair degree of accuracy!
