In conjunction with Premium Golf's clubmaking facility, the Tyrrells Wood Professional Shop offers an expert custom fitting and clubmaking service.  Our services enable you to make more informed decisions about your equipment.  Since we can order from a wide range of manufacturers and fit all different kinds of components on site, we can also offer more than one option. Equally, many of our customers will have their existing equipment altered and improved as opposed to getting completely new clubs. For more information on custom fitting, click here.

Acknowledgements

"I'm really delighted with my Wishon custom irons. Matt Antell's commitment and patience has created a perfect set of clubs for me. Whilst there are plenty of custom fit suppliers to choose from I doubt if there are any like Matt who could match his level of bespoke and professional service. Matt's approach to the analysis, the information imparted and the recommendations made satisfies me that this was the right purchasing decision. The simulator technology is clearly an essential part of the service however the personal attention is the key and I want your customers to know how much I have benefited from this."

Chosing the right equipment

Read on for ten top tips to consider when contemplating your next purchase...

1. When buying a driver, shorter is better than longer. Many of today's drivers are sold with shafts 45 inches or longer, yet the average driver on the PGA Tour is 44.5 inches! Simply put, the longer the shaft the harder it is to hit squarely.

2. Consider making your 3 wood your 'driver'. Do you find you hit your 3 wood further than your driver? If so it is likely that you do not have enough loft on your driver (for the average club golfer, even 11 degrees is not enough), so why not drop the driver and include an extra fairway wood, hybrid or wedge that will actually save you some shots?!

3. Unless you have the ball striking consistency of a low single figure player, don't even think of including a 2, 3 or 4 iron in your next set of irons. The lack of loft on these irons make them virtually impossible to hit consitantly for the average club golfer. So why not consider filling the void with some easier-to-hit hybrids.....

4. The trick to buying hybrids is to match them to the irons which they are replacing. Ensure they match the irons they are replacing in terms of loft and shaft length to avoid unsatisfactory distance gaps.

5. Don't confuse fairway woods with hybrids. To decide which is best for you, evaluate your own angle of approach. As a rule of thumb, if you normally sweep the ball off turf (ie. you take no divot) then you should replace your long irons with lofted fairway woods. If you have a steeper swing (ie. you often take a divot) then you'll be better off with hybrids.

6. There is no such things as 'one-size-fits-all' golf clubs. You don't buy suits off a one-size-fits-all rack, so why do the same with golf clubs? Every golfer swings the club differently, necessitating clubs with varying length, shaft types and characteristics, lofts and lie angles etc. If a club is set up incorrectly for you, try as you might it will be difficult to return the club back to the ball square and with sufficient speed - resulting in an imperfect shot even if you make a 'perfect' swing.

7. When selecting wedges, think about your home course. Do you find yourself normally playing of tight lies or lush fairways? Are the greens soft and receptive or hard and fast? The amount of loft and the degree of bounce you select for your wedges should be influenced by the environment in which they are going to be used.

8. Check the 'three L's' when selecting your next putter. Unless you get the 'three L's' correct you will struggle to putt well. The shaft length, clubhead loft and lie angle must all be correct for you if you are to return the putter face to the ball squarely and with the appropriate amount of loft to create pure topspin. Anything else will result in off line putts.

9. The worse you are, the more you'll benefit from custom fit equipment. Give Tiger Woods your dusty old clubs in the garage to play with and he will still get it round in a good number! The worse (or newer) you are, the more you need clubs to match your swing (and its inadequacies!). The game of golf can be tough enough without you having to play with ill-fitting clubs.

10. Don't forget about the ball. Ball technology has come on so far over the last 15 years that you no longer have to choose between a rock and a marshmallow! Under the supervion of a trained professional you can select a ball with the appropriate amount of spin to maximise distance off the tee whilst retaining control around the greens.

Remember, if you are considering purchasing new equipment you want to ensure that it is fitted under the supervision of a trained PGA Professional and utilises launch monitor technology to ensure the accuracy and objectivity of selection.
